House 1

Conceived as a modern cottage, this contemporary residence acknowledges the adjacent vernacular stable block in scale and materials.  The site is enclosed by existing high stone walls, evoking an enclosed walled garden feel.  The design was a study in optimising space to realise a contemporary 3 bedroom home on a very limited site.  To minimise circulation, all rooms are accessed off the double height central living space which enjoys a 4 leaf sliding door set to the walled garden courtyard.

Of its time, yet reverential to its existing context, the home is a modest example of how clean innovative contemporary architectural solutions can sit comfortably with and enhance our existing built context.
